The basic concept of my work is expressed in the combination of a distinctively unique view of ordinary life and breathtaking landscapes guided by a strong, personal, emotional undercurrent.
My paintings emphasize spiritual space and pan-naturalism using Hanji (traditional Korean paper) and pulp from mulberry trees. They are dyed and adhered together, before drawing, coloring, and painting. This personifies my deep interest in the status of the natural.
I constantly challenge myself to acquire a deeper knowledge of art with respect to the application of advanced scientific technology. I believe that it is essential for the arts and sciences to be integrated as they were in the past. There is great potential for exchange and development of ideas through this interaction. My interest in this integration led to my approaching paper and pulp through an exploration of chemi-mechanical properties.
I begin with layers of hand-made paper that may be extended indefinitely to cover a flat space. Paper has been involved in the advancement of human culture and civilization not only as an important tool, but in its ability to transform into thousands of forms.
I investigated a variety of textures according to enzyme treatments of the dissolved and colloidal substances in thermo-mechanical pulping, and the effects of polyhedral diffusion of colorant on the resulting paper properties. I utilized the chemically derived technology and characterization of pulp on the color of the dyewood. A canvas is created as a form that shapes a spiritual space and pan-naturalism. Sometimes the plane converts into space with paper plying.
In paintings, the shapes and images of all the objects are essentially simple. At the same time, there is complexity in the way they unify with the canvas. This “canvas”, the totally unique style using raw material of paper and painting, combines to characterize the conciseness and emotional depth contained in pristine paper. I have shaped the perception of common-or-garden life and cultural heritage to make unique and dramatic paintings.
Combined with a deep-rooted emotional undercurrent, my totally unique and detailed style of using raw materials of paper reveals spiritual space and pan-naturalism. Together, they characterize the conciseness and texture depth contained in a pristine paper. I have shaped the perception of common-or-garden life and cultural heritage to make authentic and dramatic paintings. It is my aspiration to broaden my professional sphere through interacting with different artists in the world. Through art, I believe the wall dividing the Occident and Orient can be breached.
